Chicago Airport Transportation

Chicago transportation is one part of your visit to this amazing city. I love Chicago and find it's a fantastic place to experience! Planning every detail can seem like a lot when you think of visiting such a huge metropolis.

But the best news is that it's not!

The Chicago Airport Transportation Authority planned to have lots of visitors when they put the city together so that you have nothing to worry about. The details have been thought of for you.

There are lots of options, lets look at how to get from the Airports to downtown.

One of the most popular options is to take Chicago public transportation.

1. Check with your hotel to see if they offer a shuttle service to your hotel in the downtown area, if they do it's often complimentary.

2.Taxis, after you've gotten through bag claim exit out to the line of taxis. In O'Hare this is typically the second line of cars. Each line of cars represents a different type of Airport Transportation. Taxis aren't generally too expensive, it's typically a flat rate from the Airport into the downtown area, no matter what airport you choose.

3. Chicago Transportation via the Metra will take you right into downtown and you can grab a bus or cab to your destination from the train station. If you take a train, the run 24 hours a day so you can always get into the city. With the Metra you can get day passes for blocks of time if you plan to use the train frequently. Check out the CTA "EL" train to make your way around the city. You can arrange for a trip in and grab a map listing the various train lines and where they connect to. Currently the Blue lines is the one you'll catch in the O'Hare Airport and the Orange line takes you from Midway to downtown.

4. Or skip the Chicago Public Transportation and make your way into the downtown area with a rental car. After you grab your bags head over to the Rental Car booths and arrange to get a rental car.

More helpful tips:

When you get to Baggage Claim make sure you have your Luggage ticket stub with you to pick up your luggage. If you don't you may have trouble getting your baggage, you need to show the matching numbers of your bag and the stub to the Attendant before you leave.

Note to Drivers making your way into the city. Have change ready as you head downtown there are toll roads and you must have exact change to get through, unless there is an attendant for the lane your in. Also Chicagoans are defensive drivers, they typically drive fast and aggressively especially on the highways leading into the city. In the city you'll see that the Taxi drivers are one of a kind getting their Fare from point A to B. if you drive on Lake Shore Drive be aware of the drivers and that the speed changes several times in a short period of time. I missed this once and found myself talking to a Chicago Policeman. Oops!
